About U.S. Mechanical Registrations

The U.S. Mechanical Registration is a Work registration type initially available on Teams, Business and Enterprise plans and provides the ability for a publisher or publisher administrator to perform administration necessary to collect U.S. Mechanicals. This registration type should be use when the publisher/publisher administrator only have the rights for the collection and administration of mechanical for a specific Work. This registration type is not to be used in conjunction with the U.S. Work Registration as that registration includes mechanical administration in addition to the registration of a specific work with performance rights societies.

This registration type is available on Business and Enterprise plans.

Requirements

In the U.S. mechanical royalties are payable to publishers only as a result this registration type requires that there be a publisher with a share in the Work present in order to use this registration type.

In order for this registration to deliver Work information to The Harry Fox Agency (“HFA”) the Publisher contact must contain the publisher’s HFA account number and authorization must be provided granting us the rights to handle the administration of Works on behalf of the publisher.

In order for Harry Fox Agency to be a recipient exchange the publisher's HFA account number needs to be recorded and authorization allowing us to handle the administration on behalf of the publisher must be granted.

Best Practices

  • Use this registration when you only have mechanical representation rights

  • Use this registration when a Work has already been registered with the Performance Rights Societies but not with any of the mechanical organizations or societies.

  • Collect and record within the Work Details the Work ID and the International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC) for the Work prior to initiating this registration.

  • Do not use in conjunction with the U.S. Work Registration. The U.S. Work registration includes registrations with the U.S. mechanical organizations and societies.

  • Add the Sound Recording details including the ISRC and upload a version of the recording.

By following the best practices outlined above results in complete and accurate registration of your U.S. Mechanicals. Our system will relay the ISWC, ISRC and track duration for the Work along with the mechanical registration which results in more accurate and efficient collection and payment of earned royalties by the U.S. mechanical collection organizations and societies when provided. In addition, when adding details such as the Work ID assigned to the work by the performance rights society it provides you with a source of truth regarding the Work in which you manage within our system.

Following the best practices outlined results in complete and accurate registrations of your works for the purposes of the collection of U.S. Mechanicals.

Recipient Exchange(s)

  • The Harry Fox Agency / The Mechanical Licensing Collective

  • Music Reports

The Harry Fox Agency and The Mechanical Licensing Collective (“The MLC”) are two separate entities, however, The Harry Fox Agency is a vendor of The MLC and shares their Work database with The MLC.

We leverage The Harry Fox Agency's vendor relationship with The Mechanical Licensing Collective to register works with The MLC.
